Wedding Wednesday-Saying Yes to the Dress

May 25, 2016  •  1 Comment

To the average Bride this is the most important part of the wedding. Dare I say it's more important than the groom and being a plus size bride going dress shopping was daunting to say the least.

I binged episodes old & new of "Say Yes to the Dress" both the New York and Atlanta editions. Caught up on the new plus size bridal show, Curvy Brides and I was ready to travel anywhere and everywhere for my dress. There was just one small condition I had to deal with. My budget.

The budget was actually the most important part of the event. The elephant in the room that can make or break you. If you let this monster take over you can seriously end up in the poor house and with 2 kids, car payments and rent to pay, my Cinderella dream dress would have to remain on a very tight budget.

So being a Kleinfeld Bride was out. Their plus size dresses start at $2k. Way above my budget and that didn't even include alterations! This also meant that flying back and forth to Atlanta & Maryland to be with Monty and the Harris Sisters was out of the question. My first stop ended up being the budget friendly David's Bridal.

I under estimated this bridal shop tremendously. I tried on ballgowns, mermaids, off the shoulder, halter tops, cap sleeves and no sleeves. David's Bridal had such a vast selection of plus size gowns to choose from I was getting weary and losing hope I'd find "The One" within my one hour appointment time. After about the 5th or 6th dress, I found it. A beautifully beaded champagne bodice with a sweetheart neckline and umpire waist which had gorgeous tulle floating down to the floor. Yes, I was in love. I fell even more in love when I saw the price. My dress was under $500! My mother sweetened the pot when she offered to pay half.

I bought my dream wedding dress without a second thought of going to any other store. All I had to do was not gain weight from now until my alterations appointment 6-8 months away. Ugh, this was going to be hard.

Alterations was a beast that I was not prepared for. While I had my trusty partner in crime (please see the ninja moves she has in the image above) I was not ready for the 1,2 punch the pricing of it all was going to give me. Because I dropped an entire dress size from the time I purchased the dress to my alterations appointment, David's Bridal had to rework the bodice not once but twice. Cue the heart attack. I know, who thought losing weight was a bad thing? When it comes to wedding dress alterations, losing or gaining weight can be costly. When all was said and done my alterations set me back a whopping $210! Now, to be fair I was warned by a friend of mine that alterations could get ugly. I chose not to believe her and that was a big mistake.

At the end of the day I can say it was money well spent because I got my dream dress which fit me like a glove for a little over $700! You're probably wondering about shoes and accessories. That's coming up in next weeks Wedding Wednesday so see you then!
